Comprising the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, Europe is generally divided from Asia to its east by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus region (Specification of borders) and the Black Sea to the southeast. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Black Sea and connected waterways to the southeast. Yet the borders for Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are somewhat arbitrary, as the term continent can refer to a cultural and political distinction or a physiographic one. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 states, Russia is the largest by both area and population (although the country covers both Europe and Asia), while the Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third-most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 731 million or about 11% of the world's population. However, according to the United Nations (medium estimate), Europe's share may fall to about 7% by 2050. In 1900, Europe's share of the world's population was 25%. Europe, in particular Ancient Greece, is the birthplace of Western culture. It played a predominant role in global affairs from the 16th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonialism. Between the 16th and 20th centuries, European nations controlled at various times the Americas, most of Africa, Oceania, and large portions of Asia. Both World Wars were largely focused upon Europe, greatly contributing to a decline in Western European dominance in world affairs by the mid-20th century as the United States and Soviet Union took prominence. During the Cold War, Europe was divided along the Iron Curtain between NATO in the west and the Warsaw Pact in the east. European integration led to the formation of the Council of Europe and the European Union in Western Europe, both of which have been expanding eastward since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. GNU Free Documentation License How did Europe manage to field hundreds of thousands of armed men during the Napoleonic Wars? Q. Seems to me suddenly sending 500,000 men from France into Russia would have left many farms and villages devoid of men to work the fields, mines, etc. Or did Europe have a huge population growth between 1775 and 1810? Asked by always curious - Mon Feb 2 20:26:17 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The Agricultural Revolution of the late 18th century led to a marked increase in the food supply, which fuelled a parallel growth in population of Europe. Also, army recruitment in the Napoleonic era was very different to that of the previous 2 centuries. The French Republic after the Revolution instituted a levee en masse - all men were simply drafted into the army and sent off to fight.Napoleon used a well organized system of conscription both in France and in occupied and satellite states to raise and maintain armies;this system was copied by some other European powers. It's worth remembering that apart from Spain, the French did not conduct any land campaigns in 1810 and 1811, so Napoleon did not 'suddenly' send 500,000 men into Russia… [cont.] Answered by ammianus - Tue Feb 3 09:31:32 2009 When was Europe first known as such, ie. when did people start to use the term European? Q. I know about the Greek legend of Europa and Zeus, but always wondered when the term Europe was first used to describe the continent. Celts? Barbarians? Romans? Not a clue! Asked by Blue Rose - Mon Oct 29 13:23:32 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You're right in guessing the name has it's origins in the story of the abduction of Europa. You're probably familiar with the story of the Greek god Zeus carrying of the Princess of Tyre on his back to island of Crete. The ancient Greeks came to see this as a connotation of the exploration and colonization of the new unexplored lands of the western Mediterranean, by the Old World of Greece and Mesopotamia. The Hellenes came to use the name "Europe" as a name for their territories west of the Aegean Sea, as a distinction from their lands in the eastern Mediterranean. The Romans adopted this name, "Europa" to describe the whole of European continent, separating it from the older continent of Asia. The name was adopted by all the… [cont.] Answered by unknown - Mon Oct 29 13:43:04 2007 How the Europe Countries benefits from naturalization of immigrants?
Q. Why Europe Countries Naturalize the immigrants , How the Europe Countries benefits from naturalization of immigrants ,I think naturalization of immigrants make a real problems for Europe Countries ? Asked by lovedove - Sat Jan 23 09:37:50 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Nobody benefits. Immigrants prey on the political correctness of the country they select to live in. All the beautiful unique individual European countries with national pride, flags, language and cultures are being devoured by immigrants who refuse to respect the citizens' history, laws, religion & established culture by replacing it with their own. They are successfully seeking to dominate, not live among their host rivals. It is these immigrants who come with their hands out to take and not give, posessing their own agendas of how to take from them and keep their own language, national pride, and cultures. For example, the land of tuplips and windmills is fast becoming the land of arabic, muslims and mosques. Answered by Suze - Sun Jan 24 17:36:35 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Europe"
