The social sciences are the fields of academic scholarship that explore aspects of human society. "Social science" is commonly used as an umbrella term to refer to a plurality of fields outside of the natural sciences. These include: anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, linguistics, political science, international studies and, in some contexts, psychology. Subjects such as international relations and social work are concerned primarily with application and do not constitute social sciences per se. The term may be used, however, in the specific context of referring to the original science of society established in 19th century sociology. Émile Durkheim, Karl Marx and Max Weber are typically cited as the principal architects of modern social science by this definition. Positivist social scientists use methods resembling those of the natural sciences as tools for understanding society, and so define science in its stricter modern sense. Interpretivist social scientists, by contrast, may use social critique or symbolic interpretation rather than constructing empirically falsifiable theories, and thus treat science in its broader, classical sense. In modern academic practice researchers are often eclectic, using multiple methodologies (for instance, by combining quantitative and qualitative techniques). The term "social research" has also acquired a degree of autonomy as practitioners from various disciplines share in its aims and methods. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Studying social sciences at the Open University? Q. Hi I will be studying for a BSc in Social Sciences at the OU, starting in May 2009 and consisting of a Level 1, 60 point course. Can anyone suggest to me some useful reading materials along with free on-line resources? I am new to social sciences, so all the help I can get to put me on the right path would be great. Asked by Lewis - Sun Nov 16 15:21:33 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I have the Open Univesity level 1 Certificate in Social Sciences and used it to get into uni. Its a very comprehensive course and they ease you in gently. They give you all the books you need and on that course you dont have to worry about refrencing from anything other than the texts provided. You also dont get graded on the first 120 points at level 1 and thats the same at all Unis. I did it in 2004 and my first essay only had to be 750 words which is a lot lower than actual uni. The beauty of OU is that most people are mature students so they expect you to be rusty on your skills. A good beginners Sociology book is Understanding Sociology by Tony Bilton. Its available on Amazon and it is quite a comphrehensive book for the beginner.… [cont.] Answered by NONAME - Sun Nov 16 16:36:21 2008 What jobs are available to some one with an associates in Social Sciences?
