History is the study (teaching) of the past, with special attention to the written record of the activities of human beings over time. Scholars who write about history are called historians. It is a field of research which uses a narrative to examine and analyse the sequence of events, and it often attempts to investigate objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events. Historians debate the nature of history and the lessons history teaches. A famous quote by George Santayana has it that "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." The stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the legends surrounding King Arthur) are usually classified as cultural heritage rather than the "disinterested investigation" needed by the discipline of history.

How can I make history a meaningful career? How can activism fit in with history?
Q. I really enjoy history and would love to have a more scholarly career. However, it bothers me that a job history doesn't really imply a shaping and changing of the future, while I would like to have a more meaningful effect in working towards positive change. What are your opinions on the relevance of history and how it can be meaningful? Are there are any careers you can think of that would combine history and activism? (I am also not so much interested in studying activism)

A. There are plenty of would-be activists in the historical profession. They're the people who go to historical conferences and get on their soapbox. Academics who shriek and cast aspersions on everyone who presents arguments which differ from their own. For all the talk of passion, engagement and social justice that exists in the academy, the fact is that most activists make terrible historians. Sure, objectivity is impossible. Progress a delusion. But good historians are open-minded give all arguments a fair hearing. And beyond that, if you feel so passionately about certain causes, you'd be miserable in academia. As the last respondent pointed out, activism is far better suited to politics or the law -- jobs where your goal goes… [cont.]

How would history change if the United States launched the atomic bombs in Germany?
Q. How would this change our history? Would the Pacific Theater be a bloody fight as predicted? Would the Second World War last longer? What major cities would be targeted to attach Germany, and would the nuclear fallout affect the entire continental Europe?

A. An incredibility stupid question. By the time the first bomb was ready to deploy the Reich had been defeated. For all practical purposes this could be the stupidest history question ever ask here. I will not waste my time anymore with questions like this. s_e_p

A. What an interesting idea - I asked a question about Zimbabwe in the politics section with little result but the answers to another question about the same topic in the travel section had really thoughtful answers. That was a bit of a surprise! Ok - the short answer to your question is 'almost everything' In explanation: History: 1. it's difficult to see how we can have values and opinions unless they are shaped by our own personal histories. .. 2. ...and in terms of history in general, the historical back-story (even if it needs to be extended to centuries sometimes) of any particular political issue is essential in developing a considered opinion. (I'm sure someone is going to use that apt classic quotation about the… [cont.]
