From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Eastern Europe is a region lying in the Eastern part of Europe. The term is highly context-dependent and even volatile, as there are "almost as many definitions of Eastern Europe as there are scholars of the region". A related UN paper adds that "every assessment of spatial identities is essentially a social and cultural construct". One prevailing definition describes Eastern Europe as a cultural (and econo-cultural) entity: the region lying between Central Europe and Western Asia, with main characteristics consisting in Byzantine, Orthodox and limited Ottoman influences. Western advocates of this view include the OECD, the World Bank, and US VP Joe Biden. Another definition, considered outdated by an increasing number of authors, was created during the Cold War and used more or less synonymously with the term Eastern Bloc, including the countries that historically and geographically belong to Central Europe. A similar definition names the formerly Communist European states outside the Soviet Union as Eastern Europe. These are also described as the constituents of Central and Eastern Europe. I'll lists the differences this way and then you can compare and contrast: Western Europe is advanced, democratic, developed, and industrialized. They are the high-income countries of Europe which are characterized by democratic political systems, mixed economies have combined free market with aspect of welfare trade, and they have alliances with the United States, NATO and the Europe Union. Countries of Western Europe are consistently voted as top ranking human index countries and have the highest quality of life rates in the world. Where could I find this information? Q. I'm currently doing a project on eastern Europe and need to know about the economy in that area specifically but the area is rather diversified, at least from what I know. I tried Google-ing "Eastern Europe economy" but the only real numerical information I found was on Wikipedia, which I'd prefer not to use, just in case. So do you know of any census-type sites that might have information pertaining to eastern Europe's economy? Asked by Elizabeth - Sun Jan 31 20:16:42 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You haven't been paying attention! Eastern Europe is not a single economy. There is not even agreement as to which countries the term includes, and each country has a different economy. The Ukraine has very little in common with Latvia, etc. Once you know the countries you want to look at, the CIA Factbook pages are the first place to look: https://www.cia.gov/libra ry/publications/the-world -factbook/geos/lg.html https://www.cia.gov/libra ry/publications/the-world -factbook/geos/up.html etc. Answered by simplicitus - Wed Feb 3 02:06:03 2010 Why do Eastern Europe always vote for each other in the Eurovision Song Contest?
Q. I know that there is quite a lot of friction between the East and West of Europe but there is even more tension within Eastern Europe. If they really can't stand each other - why do they always vote for each other? Their songs are normally awful but they always come out on top! There are many reasons, such as similar cultures, similar taste in music, similar languages and being more familiar with each other's musicians/songs. Also, those nations don't entirely hate each other. A lot of the people have moved on already and become friends with their neighbouring nations again. There are also parts of those nations living as ethnic minorities in each other's countries (for example there are many Croats and Serbs living in Bosnia & Herzegovina etc.). A lot of other nations also always vote for each other. Greece and Cyprus usually give each other 12 points. The Nordic countries usually give each other a lot of points. Spain and Portugal usually give each other a lot of points. Turkey always gets a lot of points from… [cont.] Answered by undir - Sat May 29 19:40:44 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "eastern europe" Eastern EU Asks Bloc to Look the Other Way on Debt - Wall Street Journal (blog)
