From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Europe (pronounced /ˈjɜrəp/, /ˈjʊərəp/) is, by convention, one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, Europe is generally divided from Asia to its east by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, and by the Caucasus Mountains to the southeast. Europe is washed upon to the north by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the Black Sea and the waterways connecting it to the Mediterranean. Yet the borders for Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are somewhat arbitrary, as the term continent can refer to a cultural and political distinction or a physiographic one. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 states, Russia is the largest by both area and population, while the Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 731 million or about 11% of the world's population; however, according to the United Nations (medium estimate), Europe's share may fall to about 7% in 2050. Europe, in particular Ancient Greece, is often considered to be the birthplace of Western culture. It played a predominant role in global affairs from the 16th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonialism. Between the 17th and 20th centuries, European nations controlled at various times the Americas, most of Africa, Oceania, and large portions of Asia. Both World Wars were ignited in Central Europe, greatly contributing to a decline in European dominance in world affairs by the mid-20th century as the United States and Soviet Union took prominence. During the Cold War Europe was divided along the Iron Curtain between NATO in the West and the Warsaw Pact in the East. European integration led to the formation of the Council of Europe and the European Union in Western Europe, both of which have been expanding eastward since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Europe and Asia have been together for much longer than India and Asia and the boundary between Europe and Asia is less substantial than the boundary between India and Asia. KT Dyke: did you just make that up or do you have some support for your statement? Asked by TC - Sat Mar 14 12:42:44 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The accepted boundaries of Europe and Asia came about for cultural reasons, not essentially geographic. It began with the ancient Greeks who recognised a boundary between their cultures and others in Asia Minor. As the geography of the region became more understood, the arbitrary division of Europe and Asia extended along cultural lines, between societies viewed as 'Asian' or 'European'. Some of the boundaries follow geographic features such as mountain ranges and lakes, but that's because it also it marked tribal boundaries. The accepted boundaries were established before the advent of modern geology and the understanding of plate tectonics. I plan to move to another country in central Europe in the next 7 years and was thinking to which one. What country do you think is the best in central Europe to live in and explain why. Thank you for your help so much. All were bad answers. Thanks for the long answer with Germany. I liked that one for description. In absolute terms, Germany allocates the second biggest annual budget of development aid in the world. Most of Germany has a temperate climate in which humid westerly winds predominate. Winters there are mild and summers tend to be cool, though temperatures can exceed 30 C (86 F) for prolonged periods. In the east, the climate is more continental; winters can be very cold, summers can be very warm, and long dry periods are often recorded. Central and southern Germany are transition regions which vary from moderately oceanic to continental. Again, the maximum temperature can exceed 30 C (86 F) in summer. Q. My friend & I are planning a trip around Europe (UK-Netherlands-France-It aly-Greece). The boat we plan on taking comes with a medium sized green room growing basic veges & fruits- for personal consumption. I'm unsure of the laws regarding these things- do we need some kind of a permit for our trip? How exactly do they check? Asked by Niki - Wed Feb 4 18:23:53 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Within the European Union - and all of the countries you listed are member states - there are no barriers for plants that I am aware of. In the case of Schengen member countries (not UK, but Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, don't know about Greece) there are no border controls by default. However every country can perform random border checks. Switzerland, which you also want to visit, does have some lax border controls; usually they are content with seeing a passport and they wave you through. Don't know what they will do when presented with a non-EU ID. Same goes for UK borders. Generally the EU is all about the free flow of commerce across its internal borders so I don't think they'll get excited about a bunch of plants.
